The vocal boosting was a chore, but words cannot describe the toil that the dropouts required. You and I have heard this thing for so long, so many times (in so many states of consciousness, ahem) that you don't even perceive them. The slow numbers had 40-60 apiece. It took months, cause I couldn't concentrate on one song for more than a few hours at a time. You know what made me start this thing? At the start, just as Roy is warming up, some guy sees his chance to be on the radio and said something loud. Asshole! This is a sacred recording! I revere it just like you. This was the turning point. Bruce was saying goodbye to the guy we loved for the last 3 years. Born to Run changed everything. By 1976, damn near all of this set was gone, as was Suki. Steve joined. Even the cover songs were scrapped. The 'new material' here was ripped up and rebuilt in final studio songs that live in our bloodstream. Listen to Gary's wonderful bass lines on Sandy and NYC--you'll never get that intimacy ever again. Personal Note (skip it if you're bored): In '75 I had the 2-lp You Can Trust Your Car bootleg. I played it with my BFF Kevin probably 40 times in 2 years. We wouldn't even talk at times, just drink and marvel at the perfection of this show. Kevin told me that night, you could drive around the Philly burbs and see guys in the next car listening. 7-11's were playing it. He also told me I was missing a huge chunk of stuff, and the slow For You could make a dead man cry. Kevin died 24 years ago in a mean car wreck. One of our Bruce-loving drinking buddies, Mark Wooley, died about 4 years ago, never did kick his drinking. It took me years to have the guts to find Kevin, knowing what I had to do. Sit on the grass, and read..... "Princess Cards she sends me................" So, this is for Kevin Flatley and Mark Wooley. You guys have been watching me all through this. Hope both of you like it. And I hope you do as well. Cheers. My thanks to JEMS, of course - I kept the files under their name to acknowledge that without them, etc. etc. Also Goody for his encouragement, double-checking the speed, and his 'tweaks.'
