Spurred on by the efforts of our pal mjk5510 to track down upgrades to circulating tapes for which no master sources are extant, I wondered if I might find some material upgrades to familiar shows lurking in our archive. I went to visit M with one particular set of tapes in mind, a collection of some 50-60 shows we obtained in ‘80s from a collector who got into Springsteen very early on then dropped out completely. I wasn’t expecting to find anything uncirculated, but I wondered if his copies of some key shows might be superior to what’s around, due to when he obtained them, who he obtained them from (he had taper, band and label connections) and the fact that his collection was preserved on clearly annotated (e.g. Dolby on or off), high-quality (TDK SA and Maxell UD-XLII) tapes. With M’s help, I pulled and auditioned several shows and found a good number of potential upgrade candidates. mjk5510 informs me this is an alternate recording to the more commonly circulated version of the 8/4 show. I leave it to him to get into the particulars and nuances of the performance and the difference between the recordings. Huge credit goes to M for maintaining JEMS’ Springsteen archive is such a well-organized and deep fashion. He truly is the keeper of the Bruce flame. Thanks as well to mjk5510 for inspiring the mission and for his on-going role as JEMS post-production supervisor. BK for JEMS ******************************************************************* Generally considered one of the best shows of the 1981 US leg of The River tour, a second alternate source is a very welcome find. The currently circulating Recorder 1 source, from the master tapes and released as 'Have The Faith - Landover '81' (EV2), is an excellent capture. There are a few known faults, "Thunder Road" is missing the first few notes, "The Promised Land" is missing the first few notes, the count in on "Hungry Heart" is missing, "You Can Look" has a quick fade out and "Cadillac Ranch" has a quick fade in. This Recorder 2 source, taken from a 1st Generation copy, is also an excellent capture and clearly done on high end equipment. It's a bit further back from the stage than the Recorder 1 source but has little to no audience noise and a high energy ambience. The faults are minimal with the exception of the back half of "Badlands" missing. We've patched all known faults except for the missing first few notes of "The Promised Land" where no patch was available making this version now 99.99% complete.
