So the story goes, Tape Man Joe attended many concerts. Joe used a Sony D6 with either a Sony 929 or 939 microphone (memories have faded on which exact mic) and TDK metal tapes. Joe made a few copies and gave them to friends but never actively traded his recordings. Recently Joe lent a few of his masters to his friend, Jungleland user G (a generous collector himself who has lent tapes from his collection to help upgrade many shows). G asked me to finish off the transfers and post them. There have been a few of Joe's Masters that found the light before this series. Most of the time, they are the only known tape in general circulation (e.g. 1984-09-21, 1985-01-05 and 1988-03-09). The next installment of this series falls into that category. The circulating version of this shows boarders on unlistenable. It runs too way fast, it's muffled in generations of poor copies probably dubbed on inferior equipment and it's missing Twist and Shout. Happily all those issues are fixed here. It's actually pretty hard to believe that it's the same recording. In fact this is one hell of a recording. This might be Joe's best recording from the Born In The U.S.A. tour that he has shared so far. It's certainly his best arena tape so far. Bruce is right up front. There's some audience participation but nothing egregious. There are a couple of minor edits. Joe had to flip twice during the first set and misses the first few seconds of "Badlands". The seemingly mandatory tape flip between "Pink Cadillac" and "Bobby Jean" misses only part of the count in to "Bobby Jean" The setlists from January of 1985 were very similar. A few shows earlier Bruce brought back "Can't Help Falling' In Love With You" for the first time since 1981. It would have been Elvis' 50th birthday the week before and he was clearly on Bruce's mind with readings of "Johnny Bye Bye" and "Can't Help Fallin' In Love With You". "I remember how bad I felt when a friend of mine called me up and told me….told me that he, that he died….felt like some little part of yourself wasn´t there no more….he kind of came in and…..was hard to understand how somebody who took away so many people´s loneliness could´ve….could´ve ended up being so lonely….but anyway…here´s a song, this is uh, it´s his 50th birthday this last week so….this is uh, this is a song called ´Bye Bye Johnny´….” Thanks to Tape Man Joe for recording and sharing his tapes and G for transferring the files. 01.BORN IN THE U.S.A. 02.OUT IN THE STREET 03.DARLINGTON COUNTY 04.JOHNNY 99 05.ATLANTIC CITY 06.REASON TO BELIEVE 07.HIGHWAY PATROLMAN 08.JOHNNY BYE-BYE 09.PROVE IT ALL NIGHT 10.GLORY DAYS 11.THE PROMISED LAND 12.MY HOMETOWN 13.BADLANDS 14.THUNDER ROAD 15.COVER ME 16.DANCING IN THE DARK 17.HUNGRY HEART 18.CADILLAC RANCH 19.DOWNBOUND TRAIN 20.I'M ON FIRE 21.PINK CADILLAC 22.BOBBY JEAN 23.RACING IN THE STREET 24.CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE 25.BORN TO RUN 26.DETROIT MEDLEY 27.TWIST AND SHOUT - DO YOU LOVE ME 28.SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN' TO TOWN Known faults: Tape flip between My Hometown and Badlands.
