When our partner, the late, great Jared Houser, started taping in the early ‘70s, the first other taper he met, while waiting in line for Who tickets in Toronto, was ML and they remained dear friends until Jared’s death in October 2016. ML and Jared overlapped on many artists, notably The Who, Springsteen and Jeff Beck, and often attended shows together. If you have ever listened to Jared’s magnificent recording of Saginaw, MI, September 3, 1978, then you heard the voice of ML, who memorably comments and makes requests, including “SUMMER-TIME-BLUES!” A few years ago, ML sent many of his cassette masters to Jared for transfers. The resulting files were sent to ML and Jared kept a hard drive of them as well, which subsequently came to me. On it are many Springsteen and other master transfers. ML and I have been in touch several times since Jared’s passing and he agreed, with some trepidation given a few negative past experiences with torrents, to allow JEMS to release one of his fine recordings. If all goes well here, there are sure to be more. Our first dip into the ML masters is the first of two nights in Syracuse that wrapped the US arena leg of the Born in the U.S.A. tour. The massive Carrier Dome was also the biggest venue the tour had hit to date, and served as something of a test case for taking the show into stadiums in Europe and eventually back in the U.S. later that year. A seasoned taper, ML does a fine job capturing the show in the less-than-ideal acoustic environment of the Carrier Dome. The set itself features several highlights, including three b-sides (“Johnny Bye Bye,” “Shut Out The Light” and “Pink Cadillac”); the wonderful late-’84, early-’85 arrangement of “Racing In The Street”; “Trapped”; and one last “Santa Claus” for the season to close the night. We deeply appreciate ML’s body of work from the ‘70s to today and his willingness to allow JEMS to act as steward on getting his recordings out in the best possible quality. Like all of JEMS’ key Springsteen releases, mjk5510 handled post-production, including vital pitch adjustments. Lastly, thanks to Jared for his long friendship with ML and the work he did to preserve his tapes. BK for JEMS
