Live 09 May 1974 (early show) version
Hey bus driver, keep the change, bless your children, give them names
Don't you trust men who walk with canes
Drink this and you'll grow wings on your feet
We've got, uh, Broadway Mary, uh, Joan Fontaine, uh, advertiser on a downtown train
Christmas crier bustin' cane, she is in love again
It's when dock worker's dreams mix with panther schemes to someday own the rodeo
Tainted women in VistaVision perform for out-of-state kids at the late show, oh!
Wizard imps and sweat sock pimps, interstellar mongrel nymphs
Rex said that lady left him limp
Whoa, love is like that
Queen of Diamonds, Ace of Spades, newly discovered lovers of the Everglades
They take out a full page ad in the uh, uh, in the, the Cashbox!
Oh and Mary Lou found out how to c-c-cope, she rides to heaven on a gyroscope
And the Daily News asked her for the dope
She said, "Man, the dope's that there's still hope"
Senorita, Spanish rose, wipes her eyes and blows her nose
Uptown in Harlem she throws a rose, to some lucky young matador
Yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Oh! Whoa oh oh oh, whoa oh oh oh, whoa
Whoa, take it down! Take it down to E! Hey!
The above lyrics are for the 09 May 1974 early show performance of DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND STREET? at Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, MA, during what is considered The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle Tour. This is a full-band performance featuring the guitar-and-saxophone-led introduction used on the Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. Tour.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed two shows (07:00 PM and 10:00 PM) on 09 May 1974 at Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, MA. These were double bill shows, with Springsteen opening for headliner Bonnie Raitt. On the circulating audience recording of the early show, the MC can be heard using of the name "The E Street Band" in his introduction. This is the earliest appearance of that name on any show audio or promotional material yet unearthed. The "E Street Band" name was conjured up only a few weeks earlier. Critic Jon Landau's much-quoted "I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen" line emanates from this night; he only attended (and his Real Paper review only covers) the late show.
