Live 05 Nov 1980 version
[Spoken intro:] Alright, keep it down. Oh. There's a lot of pretty girls in this town, you know (chuckles and cheers). That's right. Must be the weather or something, must do something to your genes or something, alright? ??? (chuckles). Me and Clarence we used to sit on my porch, oh, let me see, 31, 11, 12 years ago. And uh, we used to watch this one girl go by all the time. She used to, I guess she used to work downtown. And she was, she seemed like a lot older than we were. She had a couple of kids and... we used to just watch her. And, sometimes, sometimes there's people that you only see for a little bit. You, you don't forget 'em for some reason. People that you've only seen for, driving by in a car or who walk by you on the street. And uh, remember that one girl Big Man?
Well sometimes at night when I lie in bed
I still see her face running 'round my head
Well sometimes at night when I lie in bed
I still see her face running 'round my head
Here she comes walking down the street
Here she comes walking down the street
She's looking so fine, she's looking so sweet
Yes she's looking so fine, she's looking so sweet
And someday I'm gonna make her mine, I know I will
Someday I'm gonna make her mine, I know I will
Someday she's gonna stop instead of walking by
She's gonna stop now instead of walking by
She's gonna stop instead of walking on by
She's gonna stop
Oh my little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
Little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
Ah little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
Little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
Little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
Little girl, little girl, little girl
Ah little girl, little girl, little girl
Ah little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
Little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl
HERE SHE COMES WALKIN' is an unreleased Bruce Springsteen song that was first considered for the Born To Run album. It was later used live during The River Tour as introduction to I WANNA MARRY YOU.
The above lyrics are for the live 05 Nov 1980 performance of HERE SHE COMES WALKIN' at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, during The River Tour. Steven Van Zandt and Clarence Clemons sand backup vocals on this song.
During The River Tour, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performed a concert at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ on 05 Nov 1980. The concert was held at the university's Activity Center. It was professionally shot on three-quarter-inch U-matic videotape for promotional use. 24 songs were released on The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set in 2015. The footage was originally produced and directed by Barry Rebo and the 2015 released video was produced and edited by Thom Zimny. "All the footage that was available from Tempe was used," Zimny told Backstreets.com. "No one, for instance, cut 'Racing in the Street' because they didn't like it ─ there was no editing in that sense. We used every frame of what we had available, down to the DVD menus."
Audio for the remaining 10 songs was officially released in December 2015 on Live.BruceSpringsteen.net. It was mixed from the multitrack tapes by Bob Clearmountain in December 2015 and mastered by Adam Ayan at Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, ME. The missing ten songs were released in response to fan feedback. "We saw the petition. We read the tweets. We heard it loud and clear," Brad Serling, founder and CEO of Nugs.net told Backstreets.
There is no indication to when HERE SHE COMES WALKIN' was written. The song was a candidate track for Born To Run, as evidenced on Springsteen handwritten lists of proposed tracks for his third studio album.
In his 1989 book Backstreets: Springsteen, The Man And His Music, Charles R. Cross mentions a list of songs titled "New Album #3" that Springsteen wrote when he "first planned the third record." The list seems to emanate from very early in the Born To Run recording sessions, which started in January 1974. Among the nine songs in the list is "Here She Comes", which is Springsteen's shortened title for HERE SHE COMES WALKIN'.
Two lists titled "New Album #3 (Songs)", one containing 10 tracks and one containing 13, were on display at the From Asbury Park To The Promised Land 2009-2010 exhibition at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum in Cleveland, OH. They date from 1974 and were written on the same notebook page, but it's unknown whether the two were composed at the same time or if Springsteen returned to the same page some time later to add the second. The below scan is taken from issue #89 (Summer 2010) of Backstreets magazine in which a typed version of the lists is reproduced. HERE SHE COMES WALKIN' is on the second list. Springsteen listed "Here She Comes Walkin'" as the eleventh track.
Charles R. Cross wrote in his 1989 book that the song was considered for the third album and that "a version of the song resurfaced in 1980 as the introduction to 'I Wanna Marry you' on The River Tour."
It is unknown if HERE SHE COMES WALKIN' was ever recorded in studio. Bootleggers used the title "Here She Comes", as did Charles R. Cross in his book. However, Springsteen wrote "Here She Comes Walkin'" in the above mentioned handwritten list. Therefore, this website uses the title "Here She Comes Walkin'".
HERE SHE COMES WALKIN' was often used during The River Tour as introduction to I WANNA MARRY YOU.
As far as it's known, no artist has recorded and released Bruce Springsteen's HERE SHE COMES WALKIN'.
Thanks Kooly (at Greasy Lake) for the help.
