Something by an old house builder right here.
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
Yeah this land was made for you and me
As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless sky
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
Yeah this land was made for you and me
I roamed and rambled, I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
And this land was made for you and me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
Yeah this land was made for you and me
The sun come shining as I was strolling
Through the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting and a voice come chanting
Hey this land was made for you and me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
Yeah this land was made for you and me
In the squares of the city, in the shadow of the steeple
Near the Relief Office I see the people
And some are grumbling and some are wondering
If this land is still made for you and me
Let me hear you now!
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
Yeah this land was made for you and me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
Yeah this land was made for you and me
Come on say, "yes we can"
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
Yes we can! It's up to you now
Yes we can!
[Spoken outro:] Thank you Philly, thank you Pennsylvania. Obama. Obama. Get out there and vote. Let's build that house. Let's build that house. Thank you.
The above lyrics are for the live 04 Oct 2008 performance of THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND at Ben Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, PA, during the first of the four Vote For Change events on which Bruce Springsteen appeared. The song was played in a solo acoustic guitar and harmonica arrangement. Right before Springsteen started the song, which was the last of his set, the crowd broke into a spontaneous "Yes we can" chant while Springsteen stumping his guitar. He again led the crowd into the chant at the end of the song (marked in bold).
In 2008, Bruce Springsteen appeared on four election rallies for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama. These election rallies were billed as "Vote For Change". Accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Springsteen performed six to eight songs on each of the four rallies.
