[Spoken intro:] Oh! Oh, yeah a little bit now. Earlier, uh, today Amnesty International announced a worldwide tour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Declaration Of Human Rights (cheers). The Declaration Of Human Rights is a document that was signed by every government in the world 40 years ago, recognizing the existence of certain inalienable human rights for everyone regardless of your race, your color, your sex, your religion, your political opinion, or the type of government that you're living under. I, I was glad to be asked to participate and I'm proud to join Sting, and Peter Gabriel, Youssou N'Dour, Tracy Chapman, in a tour that's gonna begin in early September, and is gonna run for about six weeks (cheers). So, I'd like to get a, dedicate this next song to the people at Amnesty International and their idea. So when we come to your town, come on out, support the tour, support human rights for everyone now, and let freedom reign.

The above lyrics are for the live 03 Jul 1988 performance of CHIMES OF FREEDOM at Stockholms Stadion in Stockholm, Sweden, during the Tunnel Of Love Express Tour. The song was played in a full-band arrangement and features Patti Scialfa on background vocals on some few lines. Springsteen's rendition of the song has some slight lyrics variations to the original Bob Dylan version. It is also shorter; out of the 6 original verses, Springsteen uses verses 1, 2, 5, and 6.

This live 03 Jul 1988 version of CHIMES OF FREEDOM was officially released on the Chimes Of Freedom EP in 1988 (see the "Chimes Of Freedom" section below) and was also included on several other EPs and various artists albums (see the "Other Official Releases" section below). It was recorded by Toby Scott and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. The line in bold was edited out on the official release.

Though the EP was not promoted in the same manner as standard album releases, CHIMES OF FREEDOM managed to peak at #16 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.

This live 03 Jul 1988 version of CHIMES OF FREEDOM was included on the Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- compilation album.

The 03 Jul 1988 Show

As part of their Tunnel Of Love Express Tour, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performed two concerts in Stockholm, Sweden, on 02 and 03 Jul 1988. The concerts were held at Stockholms Stadion.

The first set (the first 14 songs) from the 03 Jul 1988 show was internationally broadcast on radio. The 90-minute broadcast ended with CHIMES OF FREEDOM, which Springsteen preceded by an announcement that he'll be joining Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour in the upcoming Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour.

In November 2017 the complete 03 Jul 1988 concert was officially released on Live.BruceSpringsteen.net (see the "Official Live Downloads" section below for more details). The show was recorded by Toby Scott and mixed by Jon Altschiller. It was mastered in November 2017 by Adam Ayan at Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, ME. For this release, the complete multi-track recording was restored to full length and remixed from the master tapes.

Since 2005 some enterprising record labels in Europe (mostly in the UK) have been releasing Bruce Springsteen radio and TV broadcasts (and some soundboard recordings) from the seventies, eighties, and nineties. Though these releases are not authorized by Bruce Springsteen or his record company, they are lawful due to a legal loophole in Europe.

Official Live Downloads

Prior to the High Hopes Tour, Bruce Springsteen's management announced a new service allowing fans to download concert recordings approximately 48 hours after each show. The initial plan required fans to purchase a special USB wristband, which could then be used to download a single High Hopes Tour show of the purchaser's choice and also functions as a regular reusable USB flash drive. The wristband, which could be purchased online or at the concert venue, was priced at $40. Following some negative response from fans over the high cost for the wristband, Springsteen's management subsequently announced a separate cheaper option for purchasing shows directly, without the need for the wristband. The shows were available for purchase and download via Live Nation, Bruce Springsteen's concert promoter, priced at $9.99 for MP3 and $14.99 for FLAC. Audio recordings for 31 of the 34 High Hopes Tour dates (all except 16 Feb 2014, 06 Apr 2014, and 03 May 2014) were released as such and they were available until 30 Jun 2014.

On 17 Nov 2014, Live.BruceSpringsteen.net was launched. It's a new addition to the official website, serving as an online store offering high-quality live concert recordings as well as high-resolution digital releases of Springsteen's album catalog. The download store is powered by Nugs.net in cooperation with Columbia Records. Audio recordings for 30 of the 34 High Hopes Tour dates (all except 16 Feb 2014, 06 Apr 2014, 03 May 2014, and 18 May 2014) were re-released on the new download store in multiple formats, including MP3, lossless CD-quality FLAC or ALAC, and 24-bit HD FLAC or ALAC or MQA, as well as audio CD-R with custom artwork. Nugs.net adopted the MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) format on 24 May 2017. From then on, all Bruce Springsteen live concert recordings, including the previously released ones, became also available in MQA.

Audio recordings for all 75 The River Tour 2016 dates were also released on Live.BruceSpringsteen.net in multiple formats, including MP3, lossless CD-quality FLAC or ALAC, and 24-bit HD FLAC or ALAC or MQA, as well as audio CD-R with custom artwork. Each show was generally released within a month after it took place.

Audio recordings for all 14 Summer '17 Tour dates were also released on Live.BruceSpringsteen.net in multiple formats, including MP3, lossless CD-quality FLAC or ALAC, and 24-bit HD FLAC or ALAC or MQA, as well as audio CD-R with custom artwork. Each show was generally released within a month after it took place.

Archival releases were periodically released on the same site, as part of the Bruce Springsteen Archive Series. These shows were also made available in multiple formats, including MP3, lossless FLAC or ALAC, 24-bit FLAC or ALAC or MQA, DSD, and audio CD-R. So far 90 shows (or sets of shows) were released from the ongoing series.

Chimes Of Freedom

The Chimes Of Freedom EP was released worldwide in August 1988 to promote the upcoming Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour. Some proceeds from the EP sales went to Amnesty International. The EP was produced by Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, and Chuck Plotkin.

The EP was released on 12-inch vinyl, cassette tape, and compact disc. While the vinyl and cassette issues and international CD issues had the tracks at full length, the original U.S. CD issue, which was just titled "Live", was edited for length; TOUGHER THAN THE REST has the guitar solo and one verse edited out and CHIMES OF FREEDOM has the spoken intro completely edited out. The format used was the 3-inch MiniCD, which limited the length that could be used. Rolling Stone reported that these edits were done with Springsteen's approval with the purpose being to fit the release on an affordable MiniCD. The Chimes Of Freedom EP was digitally remastered and reissued in 1999 on full size 5-inch CD. These 1999 reissues had the edited versions of TOUGHER THAN THE REST and CHIMES OF FREEDOM but later CD re-issues restored the two songs to full length.

Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- is a Bruce Springsteen compilation album released by Sony Music Japan in 2023. The compilation, which was exclusively released in Japan, consists of previously released 35 audio tracks and 62 video tracks. The collection is part of a 26-title reissue campaign to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's debut album. The series, issued in three waves (25 Oct 2023, 22 Nov 2023, and 20 Dec 2023), includes 25 albums originally released between 1973 and 2014 plus a new compilation album that includes all of Springsteen's singles released in Japan from 1975 to 1999. All audio CD's were manufactured using Sony Japan's Blu-spec CD2 format.
