Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes' cover version
Well every night I see a light up in your window
But every night you won't answer your door, no
But although you won't ever let me in,
From the street I can see your silhouette sitting close to him
What must I do
What does it take
To get you to
Talk to me
Until the night is over
Come on baby, talk to me
Well until the night is over, yeah yeah yeah
I got a full week's pay
And, baby, I've been working hard each day
I'm not asking for the world, you see
I'm just asking girl
Talk to me
Well late at night I hear the music that you're playing soft and low
Yes and late at night I see the two of you swaying so close
I don't understand darling what was my sin
Why am I down here below while you're up there with him
What did I do
What did I say
What must I pay
To get you to
Talk to me
Until the night is over
Little darling, won't you talk to me
Well until the night is over, yeah yeah yeah
I got a full week's pay
And, baby, I've been working hard each day
I'm not asking for the world, you see
I'm just asking girl
Talk to me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I don't understand darling what was my sin
Why am I down here below while you're up there with him
What did I do
What did I say
Why must I pay
To get you to
Talk to me
Until the night is over
Come on baby, talk to me
Well, until the night is over, yeah, yeah, yeah
I got a full weeks pay
And, baby, I've been working hard every day
I'm not asking for the world, you see
I'm down on my bended knees
I'm just asking, darling, please won't you
Talk to me
Until the night is over
Come on and talk to me
Until the night is over
Yeah, yeah, yeah, talk to me
Until the night is over
Little darling, won't you talk to me
Until the night is over
Oh, talk to me
Until the night is over
Hey, yeah, talk to me
Until the night is over
Oh, yeah, yeah, talk to me
Until the night is over
The above lyrics are for Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes' cover version of TALK TO ME. It was released on their 1978 album Hearts Of Stone. See Bruce Springsteen's official studio version for more details.
In the spring of 1978, Bruce Springsteen donated two of his compositions, TALK TO ME and HEARTS OF STONE, to Southside Johnny for use on Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes' upcoming third studio album, Hearts Of Stone. For HEARTS OF STONE, the Darkness On The Edge Of Town recording sessions E Street Band backing track was utilized, while apparently TALK TO ME was rerecorded from scratch by Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Springsteen also shares writing credits with Southside Johnny and Steven Van Zandt on TRAPPED AGAIN which was co-written in early 1978 during the Hearts Of Stone recording sessions.
Van Zandt tapped photographer Frank Stefanko to shoot the album cover art, after meeting Stefanko when they worked together with Springsteen on Darkness On The Edge Of Town.
Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes' album Hearts Of Stone was released on 13 Oct 1978 on the Epic label.
In addition to its release on Hearts Of Stone, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes's studio version of TALK TO ME was also included on several other official releases.
